Massage therapy is definitely a great way to relax. But relaxation doesn’t just happen to the physical body, it has to happen for the mind also. Many times, when we come in for a massage, our minds are still racing from the day. Our bodies may start to relax, but throughout the session, our minds are still continuously running. You may have noticed while receiving a massage, that as you think certain thoughts or as you speak to your therapist, your body tenses as another way of expression. Perhaps when replaying your day, your shoulder tenses, your fingers or your thumb moves remembering it’s actions throughout the day. Our minds often jump from one thought to another, which tends to happen more often as our body relaxes and our mind starts to let go of all those subconscious thoughts we have been holding on to.  Now, why does that happen?

Well, imagine your mind as a boiling pot of water with a lid. The water continuously boils and bubbles over with thoughts. This is normal. It is the mind’s job to do this. The act of relaxing is the same as lifting the lid off the boiling pot. Once the lid is lifted, water begins to evaporate and released just as our thoughts would. As air pressure is relieved in the pot, the boiling water settles. Our racing minds will do the same if pressure is routinely released, or in this case we allow ourselves to relax. So how can we truly experience full relaxation in both body and mind?

In the context of receiving massage, we can focus on the sensations our bodies are feeling: Which muscles feel sore? Am I tensing my shoulder? Am I breathing full or short shallow breaths? We also must refrain from getting involved with the thoughts that surface. Now, this is easier said than done. This is a skill that takes a very long time to master. Perhaps only monks with a strong meditation practice are able to achieve this, but learning to do this, even just a little, has extraordinary benefits. Through meditation or massage therapy we can practice letting go. We let go of the tension we hold, as our therapist manipulates the muscles. We also let go of our thoughts, as they bubble up to the surface. We do not judge ourselves for what thoughts comes up nor do we try and resolve them. We acknowledge them and let them go.

As you can imagine, this can have many applications in our day to day lives. We learn to not hold grudges (which can take a toll on your health), or let go of traumatic experiences so we can move on with our lives. It is no wonder many people who routinely receive massage experience a shift in their perspective. They are able to deal with stress a bit easier because there’s less clutter in their minds to bog them down!

So next time, you come in for a massage, allow yourself to truly let go. Allow yourself to experience full relaxation in both body and mind. Your body will thank you and your mind will thank you. The benefits will go beyond the massage table!

Celestial Spa: “The Closest Thing to Heaven!”

I eventually attended massage school and found that the curriculum focused mostly on Western style massage modalities such as Swedish, deep tissue and myofascial release.  While these forms of therapies were extremely beneficial in relieving muscle tension, increasing circulation and relaxation, it was not the same form of therapy I had experienced in my childhood visits to Southeast Asia.  Massage school, however, did open me to various alternative health techniques and philosophies, which led me to discover Thai Yoga Massage.

Our skin is amazing and most don’t realize that everything we put on our skin from soaps, lotions & creams, makeup & perfume is absorbed into our bodies.  It’s frightening if you consider how many chemically laced products we use on a daily basis and how our bodies absorb these chemicals.

Growing up in Europe, Poland to be exact, we were raised with an understanding and emphasis on using organic products on our skin.  Once I became a licensed Esthetician in the United States, over 7 years ago, I set out on a quest to find an organic skincare product line and to educate my clients on the risks we take each day with our skin as well as the importance & benefits of using organic products.

My name is Jennifer and I’m a massage therapist at Celestial Spa on Cloud 9.  I am also certified in Pre & Perinatal massage therapy.  It has been a passion of mine since the start of my MT career, 7 years ago.  What I would like to talk about today are some of the many benefits of massage during & after pregnancy.

A woman’s body goes through tremendous changes during pregnancy.  While some can be seen, such as weight gain & water retention, others such as emotional and chemical changes may be harder to recognize.  A report published in Infant Behavior & Development in 2010 reported that researchers from the University of Miami’s Medical School examined the influence of massage on both pregnant woman and their babies.  The women were given massages 2x a week for 12 weeks during and after their pregnancy.  They reported decreased anxiety and reduced depression throughout the therapy.  Also, the newborns of mothers receiving massage were less likely to have low birth weight or to be born prematurely.

Massage has also shown to be beneficial for:

*reducing stress on weight bearing joints, such as ankles, lower back and pelvis.

*assists in maintaining proper posture.

*preparing muscles used during childbirth.

*lessening the pain of sciatic and carpal tunnel syndrome.
